Player of the month January: Seamus Boxley
2 March 2010
Uhm, I don't know, we haven't discussed anything yet, I would like to stay, I mean, things are going really well and I like Leiden and I like the team. It's definitely something I would consider.
Okay, but what if Amsterdam or Den Bosch will offer you more money?
Well, it's a business, so yes, I would consider it. Money does play a big roll in it. On the other hand, I have a good relation with this college and the team. I really like it here, and that is something that also plays a big role. I can say for sure that I have a connection with Leiden. I mean, it's the first time for me as a professional that I came back to a team for a second year. Before Leiden I always played one year for a team and changed after the season. In here it feels like my second home.
So, you like it here in Leiden, what's your favorite place?
My favorite place? Uhm, probably Gerries house. If I'm not at home, I'm usually hanging with her and Bert. Watch some soccer on the 16 inch relax. That's where I hang out a lot. For the rest I don't go out so much. In Amsterdam I like the hardrock café, I really like the burgers they make over there. I'm not a fan of Mc Donalds or Burger King. It's really tough to find a good burger in here. Sometimes we go to the hardrock café with the team to eat. I also tried some Dutch food of course, like a frikandel and in October we ate that orange carrots and potatoes stuff, how do you call it, hutspot? And some sort of sweet little pancakes, poffertjes, I like those too.
You already talked about the team, it changed a lot compared to last year, what do you think about it?
We have a team of professionals here. Every day we work hard so I think that is a reason why we have such a good team. We always help each other in practice and give each other feedback. We all have the same goals, and were working to reach this goal together. And the connection between us is really, really good.
Well, that's really important for the end of the season, how do you see that?
We would like to stay here until late May. We want to compete for the title that's what we came here for and that's what we talk about a lot. If the team can play like we used to play and if we don't get injuries, I'm sure we can compete for the championship. We have the players and the depth to do it, so I think we have the opportunity.
And how about the Final Four Cup?
Well, we will try to win it too of course, I mean, that's our goal. We are two games away from it, so we will give all our best to win it. I think we got a good chance. I also think we will have a lot of fans and support over there, so yes. We are going out there and give our best shot at it. We play against Groningen first and I think we have a chance to beat them.
Let's hope the team will stay like this and no one will get injured. Because you had a surgery in November and you were forced to sit at the sideline, how difficult is it to watch the team struggle?
It's really difficult, I'm always trying to be a durable player and this was my first mayor surgery, so yes, it's hard. Especially if you look at the start of the season, it's tough to sit next to the side line. On the other hand, I also learned a lot of positive things about the team and the rest of the players. We got some really nice wins, and they played really good basketball. I couldn't play for 6 weeks and was really happy to get back in the field. When you're on the bench, you see the game in a whole different perspective. You see different things and can help the players. I also got to know the strength and weakness of the players better. I'm more confident now, because I've seen what they can do.
You said you can help the other players. It's a bit like coaching. Would you like to be a basketball coach in the future?
Well, maybe. It's not a big aspiration for me. Maybe in the future I'll get to train the youngsters. I don't like to coach at a high level. It would be great to teach kids the game without any pressure. In a high level you see so many coaches get in and get fired, it's tough.
So how about Toon, he is a defense based coach and you are a defensive based player. Is this a good combination?
Yes, it is. The coach is indeed a defensive guy and he has been an active player himself in an high level so he knows the game very well and he knows where we are right know. He knows how to approach the games. He was a great player and now he's a great coach. He uses his own experience to help the team.
Talking about great players, who are your favorites?
I'm a Lakers fan, so off course Kobe Bryant is one of my favorites, but also Joe Johnson and Kevin Garnett. They play really good basketball. It takes a lot of training and hard work to accomplish that.
Well, the season is slowly getting to its end. What was your best game so far?
That's a tough question, I don't know. I'm quite critical about myself and my own games. I cannot give you an answer. I'm still recovering from my injury and I think I haven't played my best game yet. I am still working on my ball handling and my shooting. It's getting better and better.
So the best is yet to come. The fans will like it. You have a good relationship with the fans. End of January you went bowling with the fans and the team. Something you would like to do again?
The bowling was awesome, it was nice to get out of the gym and play bowling with the volunteers. Hang out with them and the team was really great. I really like all kinds of events, I'm somebody that likes to be active, it can be bowling, but also something like volleyball or soccer, I like it all. It wouldn't make a difference to me, as long as it's something active.
